President’s Award for Scientific Publication held on 6th November 2017

Four academics from Faculty of Science, Eastern University received President’s Awards for Scientific Publication at a ceremony held on 6th November 2017 at Taj Samudra, Colombo. The awarding scheme was started in 2001 to recognise Sri Lankan scientists whose research reached international standards, and to provide an incentive to increase national scientific productivity. This year, 294 Sri Lankan scientists with a Sri Lankan Institutional affiliation received awards for their research papers published in 2015 in journals listed in the Science Citation Index (SCI).

Student Enrollment for 2016/2017

The enrolment of student for the academic year 2016/2017 was held on 15 th February 2018 at the Faculty of Science, Eastern University, Sri Lanka. A meeting was organized for the parents of the students with the participation of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr. K.E. Karunakaran, Senior Student Counsellor Dr. T.Bhavan, and Dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. (Mrs.) M. Vinobaba. 

The orientation for the new entrants was held from 16 th to 27 th February 2018 at the EUSL.

SUSRED Award 2017

Dr M. Koneswaran from Department of Chemistry, EUSL received the SUSRED 2017 Award (Support Scheme for Supervision of Research Degrees) for supervising the PhD student leading to completion of the degree within a stipulated time.
Dr Koneswaran received the award from Honorable Minister of Science, Technology, Research, Skills Development and Vocational Training and Kandyan Heritage Dr Sarath Amunugama at the awarding ceremony held on 25th July 2018 at BMICH, Colombo.

President’s Award for Scientific Publication - 2016, held on 19th November 2018

Two scientists from Faculty of Science, Professor S. Thirukkanesh, Department of Mathematics and Professor F. C. Ragel, Department of Physics received Presidential Awards for their outstanding scientific research published in prestigious international journal in the year 2016. The award ceremony was held on 19th November 2018 at Taj Samudra, Colombo presided by HE Maithripala Sirisena. Professor Thirukkanesh has previously won the award four times (2008, 2009, 2014 & 2015) and Professor Ragel has won the award twice previously (2008 & 2014).

Supporting the professional growth of teachers

Practicals for A/L students are not conducted in many Schools. This was studied and found that there are three major obstacles which retard the progress of the eastern students to acquire practical knowledge. In this context, 

as the first step, COSU has taken steps to provide practical knowledge in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology to the A/L teachers of Batticaloa region through a series of workshops supporting their professional growth.
